about

"There's Hope For You Yet (just kidding)" is Axis of Conversation's first release. It was recorded in my old bedroom with a kaoss pad, an eight-track, and a karaoke mic.

Our band didn't have a name. We didn't have a drummer either. So, I stomped on the ground and put pennies in my pockets and slapped my thighs and sampled drums from 45s I bought at garage sales instead.

We made 200 handpainted CD-Rs that we sold within half a year. Justin and I decided on a blood-splattered, fake-Pollack approach to the artwork, making endless piles of individually unique CDs. Our girlfriends (future wives) pitched in, along with my bandmates. We made another batch the following year, but have been sold out since 2008.

Still, it's probably the strangest and most uninhibited music we've ever made.

To celebrate the digital edition, I've thrown in two tracks recorded in the same period but never released . "Jangle Jangle" is a short experiment with chopped acoustic guitar samples in reverse. It's been on our website for years but never available for download. "Bedtime Molasses" is a scary thing I don't really remember making, but I do have a vague memory of sneaking into my roommate's bedroom to record myself on his drumkit while he was at work.

Both of these tracks are yours when you download the record, along with a few photos of my last two surviving CD/paintings and original artwork/liner notes.

about

Axis of Conversation Calgary, Alberta

Axis of Conversation is breakbeats and backwards guitars. It’s strings, samples and stolen noises. It’s familiar pop from foreign strangers.

Onstage, you’ll see a cello and a violin as old as your grandparents. You’ll see more Filipino men than you’ve ever seen in any other band. You'll recognize the drummer from 234 other groups. But somehow it will all make sense.
